The Budget Reading 2013

I photographed the reading of the budget in Parliament House yesterday for Bloomberg News. Bill English looked rather happy with his days work.

Sea Survivors

I love survival stories so it was a thrill to photograph Rob Hewitt and Dallas Reedy for the NZ Womans Weekly recently. Hewitt survived 3 days in the sea off the Kapiti Coast in 2006, while Reedy was the sole survivor from the Easy Rider sinking in Foveaux Strait where eight people drowned in March this year. He survived 16 hours in the freezing water before being rescued.  Quite incredibly, they were in the same class at Te Aute College in Hawke’s Bay 30 years ago and hadn’t seen each other since that time. We met on Wellington’s South Coast where I took these images.

Bastille Day

People waiting for the Bastille Day fireworks on the bank of The Rhone in Tournon, France.

Street art, Arles

Arles is the beautiful city in southern France where Vincent van Gogh arrived in 1888 from Paris and knocked out 186 paintings in the following 16 months. There is a festival of photography currently running here until September with 60 exhibitions and 50 workshops. Art abounds and you need look no further than the walls in the old town.

Olargues, France

Today I returned to Olargues, a small village in southern France where I spent 6 weeks picking cherries in 1987. Not a lot had changed.

SH1 Terrace Tunnel official opening

The Terrace Tunnel was officially opened on Sunday evening following a major upgrade. 8 new 90kW jet fans were installed in the roof and 1100 new high pressure sodium lights were fitted. In addition, a deluge system designed to suppress a fire in the tunnel was installed. It is capable of delivering Wellington’s annual rainfall in just over 3 minutes. A public walk through followed the opening which 5000 people turned out for. Not bad for a Sunday night.

Worlds biggest boat trailer?

I had the privilege of photograhing Ed and Kristen’s wedding yesterday. It was held at Ngawi on the South Wairarapa Coast, a fishing village with bulldozers and boat trailers lined up on the beach. We spotted this one during our location shoot which must be a contender for biggest boat trailer in the world.
